Australian Roadtrain

Road Train stopped in Elliot

These monster trucks are quite impressive as they  roam Australia's highways and byways at will. Measuring 150 feet in length, they are the means by which most merchandise and produce is transported across the vast realms of the outback.

This truck is stopped in the town of Elliot, Northern Australia. Elliot is located on the Stuart Highway, just north of Alice Springs. At the time I was there, the Stuart Highway, which runs from Adelaide in the south, thru Alice Springs, to Darwin in the north was for the most part a one lane road.

It was quite an adventure when traveling by bus to meet one of these trucks , both vehicles would be traveling in excess of 60 MPH, no one would slow down, each vehicle would drop one wheel off the pavement , pass, wave at each other, and continue on their way.

Dust would fill our bus, sitting in the back , I couldn't even see the driver! (No wonder everybody drinks!) That is adventure enough, but when they meet, or pass one another, that is a real treat!

Never a dull moment in the outback of Australia!!
